John Abraham’s action fest has raked in Rs 25.5 crores, while Bombay Talkies has earned just Rs 3.75 crores at the BO
Overall, it has been a good weekend for Bollywood, and a pleasant one especially for the makers and actors of Shootout At Wadala. Sanjay Gupta’s full-on action entertainer starring John Abraham had a dumdaar opening at the box office, especially the single screens which witnessed maximum footfalls in the opening weekend. The film released across 2550 screens approximately earned Rs 8.25 crores on Friday, Rs 7.5 crores on Saturday and the highest Rs 9.75 crores on Sunday taking the grand total to Rs 25.5 crores.
On the other hand, Bombay Talkies celebrating 100 glorious years of Indian cinema, was released in selected single screens and multiplex chains only. As a result, the business of this film helmed by four notable filmmakers got severely affected by Shootout… and it eventually garnered only Rs 3.75 crores over the weekend. Had it been a solo release, it would’ve been a successful proposition for the producers, felt trade pundits.
As far as our trade expert Akshaye Rathi is concerned, “Shootout At Wadala has been a big draw at the single screen cinemas in the mass dominated circuits, besides Mumbai of course. Emerging as the biggest ever opening for a film featuring John Abraham as the lead, the film’s business has had the largest contribution from a very specific audience set – men who enjoy films, clapping and whistling in the stalls of single screens. While the brutal violence and the usage of abusive language in dialogues may have kept a lot of women and families away from the cinemas (multiplexes particularly), the mass audience at the single screens has more than made up for it by giving the film a big thumbs up! On the other hand, made at a budget of approximately Rs 13 crores (inclusive of publicity and advertising), Bombay Talkies is a niche film, plus it has got a narrow release.”
According to our box office report, the top two opening weekend grossers this year is the multi-starrer Race 2 (Rs 51.35 crore), followed by Himmatwala (Rs 31 crores). Well, it seems both SAW and Bombay Talkies will recover their money at the box office considering their respective budgets! Watch this space for more updates.
