The Munnabhai actor and the film industry are aghast at the Supreme Court’s verdict of five years imprisonment for Dutt’s role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts
The Munnabhai of B-town Sanjay Dutt has finally lost his legal battle with respect to the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.




 Dutt has been given a five-year sentence by the Supreme Court under the Arms Act, in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. The Supreme Court today said that the circumstances and nature of offence were so serious that Dutt cannot be released on probation this time. Accordingly Sanjay, who has served 18 months in jail already before being released on bail, will have to surrender within the next four weeks. We trace the case…

March 12, 1993

Twelve bomb blasts rock Mumbai city, killing 257 people and injuring hundreds. Property worth Rs 27 crores damaged.

April 19, 1993

Police meet Sanjay at the airport on his arrival from Mauritius, citing an AK-56 rifle found in his house is from a consignment of arms smuggled into India just before the blasts. He is arrested.

April 26, 1993

Sanjay admits to the charges, but later retracts.

May 3, 1993

Sanjay released on bail.

July 4, 1994

Bail cancelled, Sanjay re-arrested.

October 16, 1995

After nearly 16 months in jail, Sanjay Dutt again gets bail.

November 27, 2006

TADA court’s verdict in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case summons the actor on November 27; on November 28 the actor is found guilty under the Arms Act but is acquitted in all cases related to TADA.

July 2007

Sanjay convicted for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle, but acquitted of more serious charges under the now defunct Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) and sentenced to six years jail term.

August 2, 2007

Sanjay arrested again and taken to Yerawada Jail in Pune.

August 20, 2007

Sanjay granted bail by the Supreme Court.

March 20, 2013

The Supreme Court sentences Sanjay Dutt to five years in jail, asking him to surrender within four weeks.
